This work titled Para regresar a mis raíces, no necesito estas pinches muletas! by Alfonso "Piloto" Nieves
was created as a response to how he sees life and the human condition.
He believes that humans have created behavioral patterns based on deeply rooted fears and desires of
other people, creating a vicious cycles that are passed from one generation to the next.
These cycles limit creativity, dimming the light and beauty that every human possesses by nature.
This piece marks the beginning of a new stage in Nieves's life and career as an artist.
The day before Christmas 2007 his studio burned down along with seven years' worth of his work
and anything of value that he had accumulated in this country.
Nieves was suddenly liberated from all of the material and
sentimental things that he had been holding onto for so many years,
like chains and locks that he himself had chosen.
Without anything in his possession, Nieves finally felt completely free because
he found the answers that he had been looking for in all the wrong places.
He looked within and listened only to himself, rediscovering the creative child,
the boy without fear, without prejudice, who didn't understand race or religion, who could be and do anything -
even transform leaves into wings and fly.
Nieves realized that only by returning to his roots could he learn how to walk again without crutches.
