PROCESS

“I started by creating graphite drawings which I then scanned into my computer to be printed out as laser prints on basic copy paper. After melting the encaustic wax on a heated palette, I covered the cradle board with layers of opaque colors and then translucent colors, fusing each layer with a torch. Next, I placed the cut out drawings face down on the smoothed painting surface, and burnished the back of the drawing with a metal spoon. Then, I moisten the paper with water until I could gently rub the paper and peel it off. I continued to apply more translucent layers of wax and additional images so that the first images were visible but under more layers of paint than the last images. With the final layers of wax, I formed texture on the surface of the painting with a dry-brush technique that allowed the paint to build upon itself over the raised areas of painting.”
