PROCESS

“The first step is the inspiration. I begin to explore turning these abstract ideas into a 2D image through sketches. I search for base papers, reflecting what has been chosen to this point. This is another time intensive part of my process. I also put thought into the support surface for the work. In “Refuge” I chose a cradled gessoed board. I adhere these as the underlying layer. The rest is mainly a responsive process. I change the look of the work as I move through its creation. The second layer of “Refuge” began as a carefully rendered and acrylic painted image of an angel from one of my photographs. I continued to add other media, pastels, watercolor pencils and charcoal to the surface to reflect the message invoked in the imagery. I adhered the next layer of photography and script, and layered in more paint, and incising into the surface until I decided the message and work was completed.”
